In 1979 Robert Mugabe, the leader of ZANU, and Josiah Tongogara, the commander of its military wing of ZANU ZANLA formed political party ZANU-PF. Allies under Mugabe joined the group to form the "PF", despite the fact that positions of power in the movement remained in the hands of ZANU militants. The Reverend Canaan Banana was one of those allies, serving as a figurehead of Sithole as ZANU and resigned, and then as the first president of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987. ZAPU also use the nickname of the PF for their objects, whether by calling for party elections in February 1980 and PF-ZAPU. ZANU-PF victory in the polls in one of the first democratic elections in a black country.
